Am an English speaking freelance tourist guide been doing tours for over five years. I studied tourism at the university and so passionate about nature and wildlife, and about using tourism as a tool for conservation and restoration. I volunteer with the Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve as a conservationist ensuring the restoration of indigenous tree species and extending the forest cover. No wonder it's at this place i normally meet with the people i walk around.
Exploring the Fortportal crater lakes!
Known for having the highest concentration of crater lakes per square kilometer in the world, exploring the Fortportal crater lakes is an extraordinary experience.
Start at Lake Nkuruba , where you can see more than four species of monkeys and the oldest of the 52 different crater lakes around the Mountains of the Moon.
Continue to Ndali kasenda crater lakes, each lake has its own charm, Lake Nyinambuga is one of the largest and most beautiful, now its photo appears on the Uganda shillings 20,000 banknote.
During this tour there is the option to visit the local vanilla producer who shows you his vanilla farm, the entire process from planting to pollination and harvesting, and finally the drying process. However, it's much better when you buy some vanilla from him, otherwise he'll charge you a small fee to show you around.
This tour goes beyond the crater lakes as it takes you through the local villages to see how the locals live, the banana plantations and the local market, especially every Monday and Thursday there is a local farmers market .
You can choose to have lunch at the local restaurant or return to Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve for lunch at the resort next to Lake Nkuruba.
This tour lasts 3 to 4 hours, but there is the option to hop on a bodabodas in case you get tired along the way, another great experience. Bodaboda is a local motorcycle taxi.

One of the biggest crater lakes we have and very beautiful lake. Indeed because of its beauty it's picture appears on the 20k Uganda shillings bank note.
This tour begins from here and at this point you expect to see the oldest of the crater lakes Nkuruba, at this same place also there is four monkey species that call it home, lots of bird species among others.
We won't necessarily hike the Rwenzori mountain 🏔️ but on a good day through out our walk we will have very nice views of these mountains of the moon. The view is very clear especially during the rainy seasons at some point snow can also be seen.
Rwaihamba Village stands as the largest and most vibrant village nestled within the picturesque crater lakes area of Kasenda in Fort Portal, Uganda. Renowned as a traditional center, this charming village boasts a unique cultural allure that captivates visitors from around the globe. Every Monday and Thursday, Rwaihamba Village transforms into a bustling marketplace, creating an atmosphere teeming with energy and vitality.
Lake Lyantonde is among the 32 different crater lakes and here it's safe to swim depending on the weather you can always feel free to jump in and have a memorable crater lakes swim. Surrounded by trees at this lake primates such as red tailed monkeys can be seen as well as a number of bird species.
Lake kifuruka is yet another crater lake that make up the Ndali Kasenda crater lakes sector. It's amazing to see how this lake is close to Nyinambuga crater lake and yet the two lakes do not conect. This can be evidenced by seeing how the water colors are different and Nyinambuga crater lake is much bigger than Kifuruka. The land that seperate the two lakes has a road built there hence giving you an amazing view of both lakes at a close range.
It's at this place that our walk ends and there is a lodge at this place with a restaurant so it's possible to book lunch here. the place is in a private nature reserve so it gives you an opportunity to view different primates such as the vervet monkeys, The Black and white colobus monkeys, the Red colobus monkeys and the Red tailed monkeys that call this place home.differnt bird species call this place home too, birds such as the Great blue turaco, the Cinnamon chested bee eater as well as the hornbills.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
