I will be near the monument of Vardan Mamikonyan (in the center of the Vartanants square). During the tours, I always carry Jack Wolfskin backpacks or bags.
Our tour begins at Vardanants Square. Built a century ago, this main square boasts a rich history and is surrounded by fascinating buildings. The old structures stand here, each with its own unique story to tell. As we gather at this historic spot, you'll get a sense of Gyumri's vibrant past and its architectural charm.
Next, we head to Masters Street, a treasure trove of historical buildings and museums. This street is also home to three museums dedicated to famous Armenians, offering a glimpse into the lives and legacies of these notable figures.
Our journey continues to Villa Kars, located on Rustaveli Street. This unique house, designed in the "L'Art Nouveau" style, is a true architectural gem. Villa Kars has a captivating legend surrounding its construction, ownership.
We'll stroll along Abovyan Street (formerly Aleksandrovski Street), one of Gyumri's oldest and most remarkable streets. This lively area is home to educational centers, a charming chamber theater, and a beautiful pedestrian section. It's a favorite spot for musicians, artists, and souvenir vendors, creating a vibrant and artistic atmosphere.
Next, we visit the charming Central Park of Gyumri, known as Gorka. Established in the 19th century and expanded during the Soviet era, this lovely park has been the backdrop for many classic Armenian film scenes. Within the park, you'll find our oldest theater building, now transformed into a unique educational center. Enjoy the serene beauty and historical significance of this beloved green space.
Our next stop is Russian Slaboda, an old district established in the 19th century when Gyumri transitioned from a settlement to a town. Originally home to Russian state servants, it has since evolved into a vibrant Armenian district. Rich in history and architecture, Russian Slaboda also served as a filming location for several classic Armenian films. As we explore this area, you'll appreciate its unique blend of cultural influences and historical significance.
Our tour continues to the Armenian Apostolic Holy Saviour’s Church, a 19th-century gem located in the center of Gyumri on Vardanants Square. The church suffered near-total destruction during the Spitak earthquake in 1988. However, restoration efforts began in 2002, and today, the church stands as a symbol of resilience and faith. As we visit this sacred site, you'll learn about its historical significance and the restoration journey that brought it back to life.
