Tour description

In this tour, I’ll tell you about Gibraltar’s (rich is an understatement) history, which spans from the Neanderthals to our days. Through colourful anecdotes and fascinating stories, I will bring to life the Moorish, Spanish, and British periods, showcasing emblematic monuments, buildings, and military architecture.

    Grand Casemates Square

    Today's social focal point with art galleries, restaurants, cafes and shops. Formerly British Barracks and the site of public executions. The remains of an old Moorish galley house and a gun mounted on a Koehler Depression Gun Carriage can be found here.

    Landport Tunnel & Grand Battery

    The once only landward access into the city, Landport Gate was reconstructed in 1729 by the British on the site of earlier Moorish and Spanish gates. During the Great Siege, British troops exited through here to carry out a surprise attack on the Spanish lines known as the Sortie. The Grand Battery is situated due West.

    Irish Town

    Running parallel to Main Street, Irish Town proudly boasts of its historic commercial past and current hustle and bustle with its cafes, bars and restaurants. Here is where we could even sample some of our local cuisine. The former Victorian police station of 1864 can be found here too.

    Gibraltar City Hall

    The Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery is housed here. It is dedicated to local artists. Across John Mackintosh Square, or "La Piazza" as it's better locally known, stands Parliament House.

    British War Memorial

    Situated at Line Wall Road, it commemorates those Gibraltarians who gave their lives during the Great War. Two Russians guns, captured during the Crimean War are to be found next to it.

    King's Bastion Leisure Centre

    The keystone of Gibraltar's defences during the Great Siege, this 253-year-old bastion is currently a brilliant fusion of history, heritage and leisure, and offers an array of social activities.

    Commonwealth Park

    Inaugurated in 2014, this beautifully landscaped park, is nestled within the old city walls which provides a peaceful green recreational area in the heart of town.

    Gibraltar Museum

    The Museum houses Moorish baths dating back to the 14th Century, together with a fascinating array of cultural and natural history collections, paintings and drawings & objects from 127,000 years to the present day. Worthwhile a visit!

    Cathedral of Saint Mary the Crowned

    Gibraltar's religious tolerance and conviviality is demonstrated by the proximity to each other of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Flemish Synagogue.

    Main Street

    The principal shopping street where you will also find Parliament House, The Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Law Courts, the Governor's residence known as The Convent and the King's Chapel, both dating back to the early 16th Century. The Chief Minister's office is situated across the road. Weather permitting, you will be treated to the Re-enactment Association Saturday March.
